Hello, The party isnae over!

I apologise for not communicating more on this forum.
Its been a busy couple of years. I hope all the users/readers are well.
I think that this forum still has a place for many people. It offers as much by way of interaction and engagement and uploading of images etc as any other online sites such as facebook. The key difference is that this is a bit more structured and has no adverts and little clutter.
All it takes is for a few folk to be active to stimulate discussion. I am sure many have immigrated to facebook, which is fine but these forums have been in existence for fifteen years and have connected people across the world with aspects of their Gorbals heritage. I am sure that they can continue to do so.
Do not despair! Share!

The overall thegorbals.co.uk website is about to undergo a significant revamp with more features etc and hopefully more opportunities for people to share thoughts and ideas.

I'd like to thank all those who have contributed to these forums and encourage people to continue to use them. They were saved from extinction before thanks to this site so we shall do all we can to maintain the space for people to share.
It is at the end of it all down to the users to come along and contribute.

In thinking these thoughts I am thinking of appropriate analogies for what these forums have become, analogies which have a sort of Glasgow or Gorbals resonance.
As such maybe this is the corner shop which is being undermined by the superstores round about. So what one would you prefer to use and why?

What was your favourite corner shop/shop in the gorbals and where and when did it exist. I recall Lennox's wae all the sweets which make my fillings judder at the very thought of them! I also recall the shop at the bottom of our close on Cumberland Street which used tae sell wee bags of sugar and a stick of rhubarb for a penny! Value for money eh! I wonder how much it'd cost nowadays!

Hi old friends and new ones like everyone else who used to write faithfully every week I too have neglected the site it has been going a long time. Although my name is on facebook it was my son John who put me on it but I don't like it very much and don't go into it. Maybe it's because I'm too old now but I don't like how some people come on and tell things that they should keep to themselves but as I've said I'm an "oldie" now.
Anyway talking about your favourite shops I'm sure all the shops in Cumberland St and other streets were favourites to everybody, When I was "winching" we used to sit in Annies the café but it was Charlie I think he was a nephew who worked in it. He was a great one for taking photos of many of his customers, I've a couple taken in it and my better half had his taken with all his pals.
My brother is a great one for going into the Mitchell library and he brought up photos he got copied one was the Criterion café and for the love of me I cannot remember where it was but it was 273 Rutherglen Rd so maybe someone can remember it and put me out of my misery
You didn't need to go over the town as there was every kind of shop in the Gorbals, Galls at the corner of Crown St and Cumberland St. Toffs, Carrs the shoe shop Woolfsons, the café between Warwich St and Abbotsford Pl. and the Red Star Café between Gorbals St and Hospital St. then there was the one with the Dummy bar of Toblerone chocolate in the window remember that one between Florence St and Camden St. Not forgetting all the pawns if your ma sent you which my mother did every Monday you used to hide incase you saw someone you knew.
My brother was also telling me that a family from USA was coming over or was over their ancestors were the Pinkertons . I don't know if he was kidding the A...of me so maybe the admin would know I'm of now so Margaret, Josie and all the rest of my friends is it not better writing a wee bit instead of watching all the crap on the TV, if it isn't football, tennis, politics when you think of it, it really is a "mans world" OOPS! sorry guys.
