Hi, Another request if I may can someone tell me the name and location of a Catholic cemetery in the Gorbals. My grandmother lived in , 10 Camden Street, so which resting place would be the closest to her old address, she died 1956. My husband and I are visiting Glasgow in July this year (from Australia) we only have 5 days in Glasgow, I dearly would like to visit my Grandmothers resting place, can anyone help or direct me to another site.

Hello Pepsi. I was looking at your request for information on your family who used to live on Florence Street.
You did not give your family name !!!! That would be helpful...

It is me again...There was no Catholic Cemetery in the Gorbals...If your grandmother was Catholic she was probably buried in Dalbeth off London Road in the East end of Glasgow or St. Convals out in Barrhead. Just outside of the city's limits. She probably attended St. Francis Church in Cumberland Street but that is not longer used as a church...unfortunately, but there may be documents at Blessed John Don Scotus on Ballater Street a church that replaced the old St. Francis....I have not lived in Scotland for the past 55 years but I am a little familiar with what is going on there.

Hi Patsy....I think you may have better luck on another Gorbals site called "Old Gorbals Pictures." There are a lot more people on that site...Unfortunately, people who used to be on here have switched over.
It is a facebook site, so if you are on facebook, you can apply to join and they will accept you.
There are lots of pictures on there of the Old Gorbals and people from the Old Gorbals before it was modernized....
You could try that site too, as I said, there are more folks on there now...I go on there now and again but it is really a facebook site with lots of snarking at times...I enjoy the old photos. Good Luck. By-the-way, the only thing left of the Old Gorbals is St. Francis and not too much more....St. Francis is now a social centre.

Hi, there is also the possibility of your grandparent being buried in the Linn cemetery. It is in Castlemilk and is not that far from the gorbals.

Hi, I am pleased to report I have found my Grandmothers resting place. You were correct Margaret she is At The catholic cemetery at Dalbeth just off London Road, St. Peters. Not only did I find my Grandma I also have been told my Grandfather and Great Grandmother are all together. As you can imagine I was over come with tears. Now it is count down till we arrive in Scotland 4 weeks. Point of interest the Mitchell Library in Glasgow did a search for me to no avail, they were good enough to send me email addresses of possibilities (cemetery's) were she may be and Dalbeth was the one. So many thanks to Mitchell Library. I am still on my second mission to trace family members on my Dad's side, they lived in Prestwick. Does anyone know if there is a Place, organisation that I could contact re my lost family members in Prestwick. Once again THANKYOU, thankyou Margaret for your info. Regards Patsy from AUSTRALIA

Oh, Patsy, you made my day...I am so happy that I was able to assist you in your search for your family's graves. I have a friend who lives in Ayr so I will contact her to see if she could be of any assistance for your Prestwick side of the family.
I hope you have a great time at home and I know you will be as welcome as the flowers in May even though it will not be May.
You will love the Glesca people they are so warm and welcoming to people coming from abroad who had family at home.

Hi Margaret, That is very kind of you to ask your friend in AYR, re my Dad's side of the family. On his birth certificate his family (then) lived at BURLEIGH TERRACE, Prestwick. He had brother Charlie, Tommy, Jackie, sister Ruby and Margaret. Obviously as the years have passed they may all have gone! but I was more looking for any of there children who today would be in there "SIXTIES PLUS" my age. My problem I do not know them! I have no names, the only thing I know, my Dad;s sister Ruby had a daughter also called Ruby who in 1968 came to Sydney Australia, her married name THEN was LAWLER. I have tried many avenues in Australia to no avail, so I thought if I could try there home in Prestwick. BUT my dilemma is where do I start. I tried the census in Scotland but that is not available to the public for another 25 years!!!! Maybe a phone book of any of the names (mainly the males) because of the surname "SMITH" So Margaret my quest is like trying to find a needle in a haystack!!!!!. But I am grateful if anyone can suggest another avenue I could try. Once again thankyou for your interest. Regards Patsy
