Hi Amelia + gang,
Yes it was a great night Amelia at the reunion, never did take a wee half bottle in my back pocket [should have as it was a wee bit pricey ha ha ], I would imagine that most of the people that attended were round about 50- 60 year old mark but there were quite a lot who were younger and at the other end we had a few who were/are in their Autumn years [God Bless them all]. Yes I think that most who attended would have been born and brought up in the Hutchie flats and the ones down Commercial Rd way. I know what you mean about the "body getting old" lol. Actually when I was up last week I went to the Southern Necropolis and Met Colin MacKie and his Fiance Elsie who take people on a tour of the Graveyard and are involved in it's upkeep [Fair play to them]. I suppose with me being born in Fauldhouse st which was more or less the Boundry line where Oatlands ended and the Gorbals began I had the best of both Worlds with playing in Oatlands with my pals and also playing in the Gorbals with my other pals. I remember I always used to love going to Richy park for a day out and also walking along Cumberland st with all it's many shops Amelia. Those days of the Tenements are all sadly gone now although our memorys of them are still fresh and always will be :) . I look at the regeneration of Oatlands and the Gorbals and although the new housing looks fine it will never compare with the community spirit we all shared in the Soo-side of years gone past. Well done with your Lottery win Amelia :) , right I'm off now so take good care of yourself till we speak again.

Regards.
Danny :)

Hi Gang weather ere is not very braw las few days t has been on and off raining but still w could be worse.
What like was the tour around the graveyard many a time I went over there to sit with the "weans" when I couldn't be annoyed walking along to the park, they could run around like mad and no-one t bother them as the gate was right next to our street as we stayed up at he top of Moffat street.
When you tell the younger generation about sitting in a graveyard they look at you as if you were mad my cousins man took a lot f photos when they were young in it :D
Where did all the "parkies" go and do you remember the house in the Richmond park belonging to the parkie must look the next time I am passing on the 267 and see if it still stands. They never had a bandstand did they Danny as I cannot remember seeing one, I remember the "Rose Garden" and the swings and then the "sauny" pond I know they still sail th bats as I was passing in my sons car and all the men were there so don't know how often they do that, but those swans were fearless used to keep well away from them.
Danny do you remember the wee building on the same side as the Ritz before you came to the graveyard an that wee queer sweetie shop that used to be there I think that building was only one storey on it. That's me finished reminiscing for a wee while so goodnight everyone and hope yu are all well.
Amelia x

Hi Amelia+gang,
Don't worry about the spelling mistakes Amelia , I make enough of them when I send a text message to people on my smart phone, people know what you mean :) .. Weather here in London has been pretty good all summer though we have showers this week [ach well ye canny win them aw ]. I think the Parkies are a thing of the past now Amelia [or only the odd one or two, all down to money I suppose] I'm sure the Parkise hoose is still standing in Richy park ?, I will ask on the Oatlands Memories site on face book and see what the reply is Amelia. Yes I remember that wee row of houses they were only on story high and yes that wee sweetie shop I remember that too. In fact I hardly ever saw anyone going in there ?, I went in a few times to buy a wee toy soldier and always remember there was a bell at the top of the door to alert the man someone was in the shop. I don't think there was ever a bandstand in Richy Park but I do remember those big white Swans flapping their wings and me running away from them when they did ha ha.. I remember going into the "Rosey" Graveyard too and playing with my pals but now that was way back in the mid 1950's.. Do you ever remember Caledonia st Amelia it ran [more or less opp St Bonaventures Chapel] from Caledonia Rd over to Dixons Blazes ?. Well a guy asked me what was the name of this street when I was up on Holiday the other week and I said there is no street there ?. Well there was mo street ther when I lived in the Soo-side from 1948-60 so it must hve been made sometimes in the 1960's, they must have taken away part of the allotments to build this street ?. Anyway I looked when I was passing by in my taxi going to the Glencairn club for the Gorbals reunion do and sure as night follows day there was /is a Caledonia st, well I would have lost money on that one ha ha . Right I will finish for now Amelia so take care and God Bless. x

Regards.
Danny :)

Hi Amelia, Danny and Gang.
You are correct Danny there was no Band Stand in the Richmond Park but there was one in the Green...We used to go to it when they had concerts there...It was down like in a valley near that big tall monument with the seats semi-circled around the stage...It had an iron fence (pailes or railings as we used to call them) all around it too and a hedge inside the fence. You had to pay to get in...Cannot remember how much it was but we never paid...We had to stand outside the railings and "keek" though the bushes...No money for spending on seats when we could stand. We used to come home and have a wee concert in the back and try to copy what we saw at the concert...There were some comedy acts as well.
Well, that is all I can remember about this subject.
Take care,
Margaret

Hi Margaret, Danny and gang that's right about that street I'll tell you why, when we moved from Moffat St. in 61/62 my auntie was still there as she stayed up 450 last close before you came to the auld church, I think there was a shop hoose there and they were building the houses just where the Ritz was and she got one of them along with a few people who stayed next to us, I would have got one but they were only 3 apts and I needed a 4apt because I had 4 weans by then and when we went down to visit my auntie we used to walk up that wee street and she was in the second building which was called Braehead St. the wee street went straight on up to the industrial estate where there were a lot of works the estate starts from the street where the BOC was and went straight right into the estate and it spans up to the top end of Lawmoor street, is this a history I am giving you all
When you mentioned that bell in that wee shop it came right into my head, what did you think of the transformation in the Oatlands and they are still building, my sisters grandson bought a flat last year it is lovely but I still say that that shouldn't have been allowed. Tell me something Danny are you getting a vote for the referendum a woman said every Scottish person wherever they stayed has to get a vote, what about you Margaret? I am still undecided all my family are voting for it.
Right I'll love you and leave you all and I'm glad you had a good time
Amelia x

Yes, Amelia...you missed your calling... You should have been a "History of the Gorbals" teacher in the schools...If you do not know it, it is not worth talking about and I mean this is the very best way...I am so glad you remember all these things because, being gone (and I do not mean in "The Heid") for over 52 years, some things I have no recollection about anymore...too much stuff in my "Noggin." ha. ha.

I am now an American citizen so I do not think I can vote and from what I hear and read in the newspapers from home on the Internet, I do not think I would vote "Yes." Too many unanswered questions about social security, pensions and paying for medicines...Unless I absolutely knew what was being offered up front I would hesitate...Look what happened to us with Obama...I used to take a medicine, that I take once a day, and have been doing so for years and years...My husband's medical plan dropped paying their plan and put us on another plan for medicines and doctors. So the last time I needed a refill for the pills I used to pay $25.00 for it would not cost me $500.00 for the same ninety...This particular drug now can be bought over-the-counter for $25.00 for 45 of them..only half the strength so I finished up buying them...So my take on it is...sometimes it is better to stick with the devil you know than the devil you don't know.

Off my soapbox now..
On my holidays at the NJ shore, Glorious.
Margaret

Hya Amelia,
Yes so much has changed since Iv'e been gone away [46 years], over all the new buildings or the regeneration of the Gorbals and Oatlands are soundly constructed buildings with the exception in the Gorbals of the "Dampies" + Queen Lizzie buildings designed by Basil Spence, when you look at the low level buildings [3 high I think] they look really nice and all the regeneration of Oatlands looks very pleasing to the eye and I wish all the people living there a healthy long life. Although our generation will always remember the soo-side with all the auld Tenements with great affection but time marches on and you have to move with the times, in my opinion there was a lot of the Tenements in the soo-side that could have been refurbished but the Architects and planners got together and said no we are going to flatten everywhere and start afresh the exception being of a few buildings like the iconic McNeil st Library building, Thomson memorial Church etc. Now Braehead st is classed as the Gorbals, as I always stated when I grew up in Fauldhouse st that this was the boundry line where Oatlands ended and the Gorbals began, suppose I had the best of both Worlds with my pals I played with in Oatlands and my other pals in Moffat st and Norfolk st ach sure it's all the soo-side anway Amelia and there was no difference with the Tenement buildings in Oatlands and the Gorbals , the exception being those lovely red stone buildings at the far end of Oatlands just before you reached Shawfield stadium. Aye that was a funny wee shop where the Ritz used to be Amelia it's funny how things like the bell on the door stays in your mind. No I wont be able to vote on the refferendum as it's only people who live in Scotland that are allowed to vote [including people who live there but are not born in Scotland], which is a shame as I would have liked to vote yes, why should any country [England] tell Scotland how to run their affairs and why should Scotland not be in charge of their own destiny !! As far as I can see Scotland would be so much better off being an independant Country but others may disagree [which is their choice], still it wont be long till we find out with the vote coming soon. Right I will finish for now Amelia so I will say cheerio for now. x
Regards.
Danny :)
