Hi Danny ,Sheila & Gang,
First of all apologies for being absent from the site .
In my defense a couple of months ago I woke up to find an inch of water in my downstairs lounge
and after we mopped this up I went outside and found that half my drive had washed away due to
the lack of attention to ditches and because they were full the the deluge of rain over a few days
came cascading down the steep incline and did a sharp right into and onto my drive .!!!
Anyway we have almost got back to normal and we are just waiting for our contractor to
finish the repair to the drive . Could have been a lot worse .
Being away from the site has allowed me to reflect and when we started the New Year I
personally felt that I was struggling for new material < replies to posts>
But as usual Danny you have kicked me off again with you mentioning the "Barras"
Frank Ifield was singing a song called "I remember you " about a million times on this particular Sunday and there was a mobile van making dozens and dozens of "Dough-nuts"
He was called "Danny's Delicious Dough-nuts" That is true and there was an African
gentleman selling Snake oil and all sorts of weird "Potions" and for effect he would scream and
shout and almost go into a trance. These potions were going to cure everything including colds,
warts depression etc. etc. There was the horse racing tipster wearing a Trilby hat and he would be waving a small brown envelope in the air . In this wee envelop was the name of the Winner of
the forthcoming "Ebor Handicap and you could but this bit of useful information for Five Shillings
<two Half Crowns > in old money . Those that Purchased the said envelop were advised not to
tell any strangers close to them . I am sure when he got a few pounds together he went to the pub
for a few beers as he had a very large "Bulbous" nose or < Boozers Nose"
Danny what characters then and I nearly forgot to mention the wee Four foot nine Irish
Midget who used to crack a whip and invite everyone to come not too close to him and he would proceed to lie down bare chested on top of broken glass and there was never a shortage of this material
and he would invite a member of the public to stand on top of him .
After he got up there was not a mark or blemish on his skin.
They were all characters in the eyes of an 11 year and I was mesmerized by it all at the time .
PS
I am visiting my nephew in Nitshill next week and meeting up with family so I am looking forward to
getting things like Mince Pies ,Bridies ,Tattie Scones , And my favorite of all a good old fashioned
Curry which they have not yet discovered here in France,!!!

Take care and best regards to all and especially to the volunteers for all there efforts.!

Reg :)

Hi Everyone glad everyone is coming back and that was good reading all the anecdotes tonight
I don't think any of you young ones will remember the man that used to tear a phone book over in the barras. He started in the centre of it and twisted and turned it until it was halved in two across the middle of it and the phone book at that time was for the whole of Glasgow not like the ones we get now but then years ago hardly anyone had phones it was only the "rich people"
For the people who don't live here anymore you ought to see changes now in Cathcart Rd. It is now the new bus depot but it isn't opened yet but it is big, it is across from where Dixon Blazes . Norrie I have a school photo of a class in St Lukes school the person my brother-in-law is in it, it is a copy but he is about 74 now if you are interested in for your facebook
Sheila how is hubby I hope he is keeping better Margaret sent you an email did you get it?
Glad to see some of the "oldies" back keep writing in
Goodnight Amelia x

Hi Gang,
Glad to hear from you again Reg, sorry to hear about the water problem you had and hopefully you will be back to normal soon. Yes the Barras there were some characters over there years ago and yes I do remember the wee guy laying on the broken glass and the other guy ripping up the phone book. I wonder what it's like today, I must try and take a wee trip over there when I'm up this August for 6 days in Glasgow. I must say I'm looking forward to going to the Gorbals reunion and having a great old talk with people there on the night, speak soon REg, Amelia, Norrie and gang.
Regards.
Danny. :)

Hi Danny, I pass through the Barras often but have never seen anybody other than folk selling stuff

There was a busker who played guitar but I have not seen him for many a year

Enjoy your trip home and the reunion

Hi gang
Hope this finds everyone well.
Reg it is great to see you back on here, wondered where you had got to. Glad you got the water problem all sorted out and hope your driveway is sorted now too. I remember that Frank Ifield song really well.
Loved the barras. Went there a few years ago and my friend kept telling me it wasn't the same and I wouldn't enjoy it, well it's maybe not the same as it used to be but I really enjoyed it and had so many laughs and met so many characters it made my holiday complete. My sister used to have a stall in the barras about 40 years ago and it just brought back great memories being there again. I remember some of the characters a few of you mentioned here. Would love a wee trip to the barras again. Amelia will answer your message in the post I started "Just popping in" Cheers, Sheila
