Does anyone remember the King family from Oxford St. Mr King was a bookie, had 3 sons Billy, George & Hugh. When the Queen's coronation was on tele Mrs King invited all us kids to watch it in her home cause we didn't have one. Also, Hughie King almost knocked out my front tooth in a brawl we had in Oxford Lane.. those were the days!!

Yes, I remember wee Murn and her shop in Sandyfauld St and also went to St. Francis School which had the big bell called Paddy in the side yard. Split my chin open in the school yard there when I was six. Have written three books, the first one features much of my life growing up in the Gorbals from 1936 - 1958. I recall dirty Maggie's bookstore in Rutherglen Rd facing where I lived, Greasy Peter's fish and chips (best in the Gorbals) and the Glen Fish and chips in Rutherglen Rd. Our neighbours in 380 Rutherglen Rd were the McCormack's, the Bonner's, the Creamer's, the Bell's. Are any of you out there? George Bell used to pipe in the new year with his pipes while standing on the landing above us. These people are all mentioned in my first book which is called "Whush...Up the Lum". Would love to hear from any of you.

Does anyone remember an incident in the early 50's that took place at the Queens Park Recreation Ground. A tiger was blindfolded and lowered onto an elephant. They stampeded and the caging fell apart causing everyone to evacuate. I need to know more about this as I remember being there.

My Da's uncle (Alex Wilson) tells a story that either his Da or Granda (Alex/Bernard Wilson) was Coxswain in a rowing squad who were awarded the Key of the City of Glasgow (around the start of the 20th century). Does anyone know anything about this? I don't know what they had achieved but apparently there is/was a plaque at the People's Palace. It would be great if anyone had any info. Thanks!

Accidents. There are 2 accidents that stick in my memory and I wonder if anyone from the Gorbals can recall them. The first was the death of a young girl who was knocked down and killed by one of the RAF lorries based at Richmond Park. The accident happened on Rutherglen Rd at Snowden St where she lived and was due to be the May Queen that year, which I think was 1942. The other concerns a collision with a bus and another vehicle opposite the Ritz Picture house at the junction of Caledonia Rd and Rutherglen Rd and was in the winter of 41 or 42. Some of the casualties were taken into closes at Braehead St, awaiting the ambulances. As a youngster these memories have stuck with me and I wonder if they are correct.

Hi, just following up on the details left on 09/07/03. Looking for childhood friends of my mother Mary Donnelly (Black). Born 1944, lived Ballater St in the 1950's. From St. Lukes mum went onto Holyrood. Younger sister Catherine went on to St. Bonnies. We all moved onto Castlemilk Drive in the early 60's. Any news greatly appreciated.
